ROT: Compost vs. Surgery
Single channel video and sound screening in Plestcheeff Auditorium at Seattle Art Museum
Festival Program
Curated by S. Surface and Molly Mac
ROT: COMPOST VS. SURGERY links a tradition of strong material physicality and visceral painterly aesthetics explored in SAM’s Big Picture exhibition to urgent contemporary conversations about bodies, aging, identity, and health. In ROT, artists revisit, reinterpret and expand the scope of performative image-making processes of the Vienna Actionists, post-minimalist artist who made work about the body in landscape, feminist performance artists and Abstract Expressionists.
Proximity to SAM’s Big Picture exhibition raises the question: are ROT artists engaged in process of composting the canon of art history or are these works a more surgical intervention/redirection of those narratives?
